Be punctual
We all know that time doesn’t always work out in our favor, however we all understand the importance of being on time. Being punctual plays a big part in your life as a stylist. Building that habit now, while in cosmetology school, will prove beneficial to you in the long run.
Make punctuality a priority while in cosmetology school. Show up at least 15 minutes early to class. Prepare for your clients while working in the student salon at least 30 minutes in advance.
Practice
I know you've heard the saying "Practice makes perfect". It's true practice is essential to becoming a confident successful beauty professional. Research suggests that it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill to mastery. With cosmetology programs ranging from 300 to 1000 hours it is safe to say you will not leave being a master, however you should take advantage of the time in school to be introduced to as many skills and techniques as possible.
Take every opportunity to practice your craft. The more you practice, the more comfortable you become. You will begin to get quicker, developing your own techniques and aesthetic. The more you challenge yourself with new skills and practice various styles the more confidence you will have once graduating. Take advantage of your time in school challenge yourself, practice new skills and technique, ask questions and learn from your instructors and peers.
Pay attention
Instructors are here to help you and provide you with the information you need to be successful, so pay attention. Most instructors have or are currently working in the industry and can provide you with real life insight on how to build a clientele, how to get hired at your dream salon, or how to get your start as a beauty professional (hair, makeup, wigs) in production. So go ahead be an active participant in class and take notes, there is some much to learn in a short amount of time.
Embrace the Reality That You Will Make Mistakes
Don't be afraid to make a mistake, even the best cosmetologist will make mistakes. You're going to have some slip-ups and that's okay, that's a part of your journey! Always remember this: what doesn't challenge you, doesn't change you. Use your mistakes as another learning opportunity to learn. Turn those weaknesses into strengths.
